Words with My Father : A Bipolar Journey Through Turbulent Times | Lowell Klessing & Lukas Klessing

 (Opinião em português abaixo)

Mission: A deceased father and alive son discuss the development of the father’s bipolar condition during the turmoil of the 1960s and explore the insights into better mental health that readers (like you) can absorb from his intense odyssey.

Synopsis: Words With My Father offers a gripping portrait of the evolution of a young man’s mental illness and how it manifested into a dramatic and often dangerous existence during the turmoil of the Civil Rights, Peace and Conservation movements.

Words with my father is a autobiographical and biographical written by Lowell Klessing and Lukas Klessing, father and son. It is a book of memories that involves the topic of mental health, more precisely bipolar disorder.

It is interesting to follow both perspectives: the side of a man who fills his days with activism, work, research, writing, and the perspective of a son who observes his father and reflects on what he passed on to him.

In the parts narrated by Lowell we can see that he has a great ability to tell us the events of his life and ideas in a clear and methodical way. I felt like I was around the campfire in a summer night listening to him tell his story. Lowell grew up on a farm, but his life path led him to dedicate his life to defending causes he believed in (such as the civil rights movement and the Vietnam anti-war movement), thinking outside the box and finding ways to cope with his mental health.

In turn, in Lukas' reflections it is possible to understand how his father's strength was reflected in his development and how he passed on his values and the power that nature and work have on mental health. However, I really liked that Lukas himself questioned certain positions and actions taken by his father, because we're all like that, right? We are children and grandchildren and no matter how much we love and agree with our family in certain actions and ideals, we do not always end up agreeing on everything. I liked that Lukas brought his own reflection on situations in which he thinks his father didn't practice what he preached. I think these types of reflections made the book much more complete.

I loved that Lukas got to know his father more through the adventure of exploring his writing and photographic albums and that he even concluded the book with some photographic records of his father. It made me feel even closer to their journey.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading testimonies involving mental health, activism and inspiring people.

Words by my father é uma autobiografia e biografia de Lukas Klessig e Lowell Klessig, filho e pai.

Judgement Day (Seekers #2) | Josie Jaffrey

(review in english after the portuguese one)

Sinopse: Vampires don't get happily ever afters.

Jack Valentine finally has her shit together. She has a great job, great friends (well, one at least) and a girlfriend whom she loves, even if she can't work up the courage to tell her that yet. Unfortunately, she also has an archnemesis who's about to punish her crimes in the worst possible way: by making her spend time with him.

Which she could cope with, maybe, if she didn't have problems at work as well. When the body of a human judge is found in a locked library, there's no denying that she was murdered by one of the Silver – by a vampire – and the evidence points worryingly close to home. If that wasn't bad enough, some of Jack's least favourite people are opening a new blood bar in Oxford with questionable motives. For Jack and her team, it's becoming increasingly hard to separate allies from enemies.

With conspiracies on every side, the simmering tensions in Silver society are about to come to a head. As usual, Jack intends to be right in the middle of it. She does like it when things get messy.

Judgement Day is the second book in Josie Jaffrey’s Seekers series, an urban fantasy series set in Oxford, England.

Judgment Day é o segundo livro da série Seekers (opinião do primeiro livro - May Day - AQUI) e foi uma surpresa!

Judgment Day is the second book in the Seekers series (first book review HERE) and it was a surprise!

It had a slow and "too policial novel" start for my taste, however, this book was full of certain situations that make us curious about the direction that this story will take.

So for a little background: Jacqueline “Jack” Valentine has been Silver (vampire) for 20 years, but in vampire years she's still considered a rookie. Jack works for the Seekers, kind of a Vampire CSI whose purpose is to keep the existence of these supernatural beings a secret from humans.

I love that Jack is a strong and independent woman, but that on the other hand she is still struggling with what she wants for her life and the way she's constantly growing and learning from her mistakes.

And the slow burn? wow

If in the first book we were already attached to the fantastic love triangle of Jack, Drake and Tabitha, in this book we are completely undecided about which couple we ship.

I love this world and the way everything is created! When I read this book, I had just finished reading the Solis Invicti saga, whose story takes place after the Seekers series, and I was in awe of Benedict that I couldn't even see the mention of this creature that was already getting on my nerves...! That's why I find Josie's writing extremely engaging, I'm able to feel so much empathy and affection for some characters and extreme hatred for others!

With this book we managed to suspect who will appear in the next book and how it will meddle in Jack's life and I am very excited to read the sequel (when can we expect the third book, Josie?).

This book (as well as the first one: May Day) is available on kindle unlimited.

Seducing the Saint (Good Ol' Boys #3) | M.J. Hendrix

Sinopse: I hate Silas Saint. But we weren’t always enemies…not even close.

Now, he’s a star D1 college baseball pitcher, bound for the major leagues.
We were best friends growing up, but I ran like hell after the scandal (ghosted him, actually).
I guess his taste has changed from trailer park to two-faced blonde sorority girls.
I was perfectly fine with ignoring his existence before I was offered a job I couldn’t refuse. If I want my school paid for—I’m stuck working for the head baseball coach.
Which means I’m being forced to watch Silas sweating through batting practice and striking out every opponent he’s up against. If he’d stop glaring at me from across the cafeteria, maybe I would stop flirting with everyone on the team except for him.
I can’t say why I hate him—it’s a big, dirty secret. A secret Silas CANNOT find out.
A scandal. The best word to describe my life up to this point is scandalous.
And the ‘scandal’ part, started with a Saint.

This book is a complete standalone, but the best reader experience would be to start with Falling For Temptation, book 1 of the Good Ol' Boys series. This is book 3.

Disclaimer: Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Seducing the Saint is the third book in the Good Ol' Boys series and brings us the story of Silas and Scarlett.

Silas was raised in a small town and is the Pastor's son, but in college he is known for being a star in the baseball team.

Scarlett was raised by her single mother and represents everything that Silas' parents did not approve of for their son. She had to move many times with her mother, who had many relationships that didn't go well, so Scarlett had to grow up faster, learning the value of work and supporting a family from an early age.

Silas and Scarlett were childhood friends, until the last letter Scarlett wrote to him abruptly ends that friendship. They thought they would never see each other again, until they meet at a university party where Silas is the star of the baseball team and which Scarlett recently joined as an equipment manager of the baseball team.

"They say you never forget your first heartbreak. I was hoping I'd never have to see the source of mine in the flesh again." - Silas

With this forced approach we discover their story, the reason why their relationship changed and how not even their hate for each other manages to leave them indifferent and avoid the attraction they feel for each other.

I liked the way M. J Hendrix introduced sport in this book, making it different from the other book in this series that I also read in partnership with the author (you can read my review of the book Seeing Double here), which I also really enjoyed.

I liked the slowburn of "Seducing the Saint", but it was slower than I would have liked and, despite understanding why Scarlett fell out with Silas, I feel that he was wronged in this story because he was "in the dark" about the real reason.

I didn't think Silas deserved that much hate from her, and on the other hand, I also didn't like Silas referring to her as a walking scandal. However, I understand that his side is biased by the opinions and teachings that his parents transmitted to him.

In general, it was a pleasant read, but I felt that the family drama lacked development and it would have been an asset if the author had explored Scarlett's traumas a little more when it comes to relationships so that we could understand why some of her attitudes.

I really liked Lucy, Scarlett's friend, and Dan, Silas and Scarlett's childhood friend. Lucy and Dan are two side characters that I can't wait to get to know them better in the next book. These two were a pivotal point in Scarlett and Silas' relationship and monumentally helped Scarlett to realize that trusting someone and being vulnerable doesn't always have negative results.

You'll like this book if you like the tropes: childhood friend romance, second chances, enemies to lovers, bad girl vs. good boy, college romance, sports romance.

Paper Planes | Jennie Wood

Review in english:

In Paper Planes we follow the story of Dylan and Leighton who go to a summer camp for troubled teens after a life-changing event.

Throughout history, we get small clues about what led to the event that made them end up at that summer camp and about how their behavior and respective final evaluation could change them for the rest of their high school path.

I found interesting these two LGBTQIA+ characters relationship (in this book we have non-binary and asexual representation), the way they deal with who they are and how their different personalities and perspectives translate into a friendship that is constantly put to the test by prejudice and social pressures.

I confess that it was painful to see how their friendship evolved and it hurt at some point to see how someone we love could become an emotional trigger to/in us. It turns out to be a duality of emotions that shouldn't be together, but often are.

Paper Planes was a 4 stars book for me and I honestly hope there's a sequel, because I just don't accept that this story stops here.

Regarding the ilustrations, I loved that the tones changed from the present to the flashbacks making it easy for us to realize whether we were in the present or the past.

Paper Planes is a book written by Jennie Wood and illustrated by Dozerdraws and will be published on May 16, 2023.
